The logs were harvested by underwater treasure hunters and used to create DW's Timeless Timber line, featuring 25th Anniversary Lake Superior Maple sets in 1997 and DW's 30th anniversary Lake Superior Birch sets in 2002). "It was practically an accident that these logs were even found, much less turned into musical treasures. Both the birch and the maple have a rare musical temperament due to the cold water curing the wood, but each also has its own unique tone. What a way to celebrate 30 years in the business." These drums are like no other in the world. I've researched it, and the chemical and biological process that the wood underwent has, as John says above, “cured” the wood. However, the process is a bit more complicated (and fascinating): microorganisms have digested all of the sap, minerals and other ‘non-wood’ substances, so that what’s left is only wood fiber. Thus, the structure of the wood is composed of thousands of microchambers, giving the wood a very distinct sound. Basically, they resonate FOR DAYS! And the tone - wow! - crystal clear and true. I’d describe them as having the high end of birch, the mids of maple, and the bottom end of beech or walnut. ![]() Just a really balanced, elegant and remarkable tone. The bass drum has that perfect blend of clear attack and substantial bottom end ‘boom’, and the snare drum sounds a lot deeper than a 5”, but with that strong high that birch is so famous for. But, what was most surprising was how much deep bottom end the hanging floor toms have! For DW Fast-tom sizes, they really can sound like a 14x14 and 16x16 at lower tunings. In general, all of the toms have 3 very clear tuning sweet-spots: at low, medium and high. The shells really function beautifully on what are effectively 3 separate octaves. Needless to say, these are the most ‘musical’ drums I’ve ever played. ![]() I’ve played DW Collectors maple and birch, Yamaha Recording Custom, Pearl Reference Pure, Sonor S Classix and Hi-Lite, Tama Star and other high end drums, and these really are the most totally unique, pure and melodic drums I’ve heard. But, they still manage to possess ample attack, projection and ‘edge’ for louder or more aggressive musical styles. The shells are individually hand signed, numbered and dated with signatures by DW's John Good (Pres) and Don Lombardi (CEO). These are very rare and you will not likely find another one this clean. There is some pedal rash on the bass drum hoop so they were played by someone at some time. Shell pack only - No stands or hardware are included! They have been in my smoke free humidity controlled studio since I purchased them 15 or so years ago. This is a serious collector's kit that is very rare and in superb condition. I would rather keep it than discount it.īecause of the unique nature of this set, I am not willing to ship it. If it were damaged it could not be replaced.
